Heater Coils & PIDs

Heater coils & PIDs were originally popularized for eNails and concentrate consumption, however these days we're big fans of using them in our ball vape setups! A ball vape PID is the temperature controlling box that ensures the heating coil stays at the perfect temperature. The PID is constantly measuring the temperature of the coil and making small adjustments to ensure that no matter what you're using the coil for, your temperatures always stay where you've set them. This greatly simplifies the heating process and also delivers consistent results from your ball vape or eNail.

How Does a PID Controller Work?

A ball vaporizer PID, which is the same thing as a PID for e-nail, generally has a wall plug to provide sufficient power. To get going with a new PID you want to start off by plugging it into the wall and then plug your coil into the PID. The majority of PIDs in our industry utilize 5-pin XLR connectors, however it is important to make sure that the ordering of the wires within those 5 pins (referred to as the "pinout") are consistent between your controller and coil.

Before you turn on the coil, make sure that it is resting in a Suet Jade Porcelain Stand or other heat-protective enclosure. Once your heating coil is safely enclosed, you can turn on the power and adjust to your preferred temperatures. The QaromaShop PIDs utilize up and down arrows to set your preferred temperature. Once set, the PID will do all the hard work of maintaining temps and you can just sit back and enjoy the sessions!

What Pinout Do I Need?

There are a couple of popular industry standards for the ordering of the wires within the XLR connection. Luckily, if you already have a PID that utilizes the Disorderly Conduction / Auber / Cannabis Hardware pinout we've got a Universal Coil Adapter which will let you operarate a QaromaShop coil on your current PID. Below are the two pinouts that we see the most;

QaromaShop Coil Pinout:

PIN 1 = Thermocouple-, PIN 2 = Thermocouple+, PIN 3 = Ground, PIN 4 = Power-, PIN 5 = Power+

DC/Auber/CH Coil Pinout:

PIN 1 = Power-, PIN 2 = Power+, PIN 3 = Thermocouple+, PIN 4 = Thermocouple-, PIN 5 = Ground

We know coils and pinouts can get confusing so don't hesitate to reach out to the Ritual Colorado team if you'd ever like some assistance building your perfect setup!

Heater Coil & PID FAQs

How do I grab the heater coil?

We suggest using a coil handle in your setup to make the hot coil easy to manage. While it is possible to run your ball vape without a handle, we find the coils are too small to confidently grip and also like the aesthetic of a handle. Just make sure you never touch the coil itself when it's heated up!

Can I stretch my own heater coil?

Absolutely, we've even got some instructions in our QaromaShop Installation Guide to help you out! We love using stretched 20mm heater coils with our Taroma Lite+, Taroma 3.0 and Taroma Lite XL to better distribute the heat across all the rubies inside.

Should I turn the PID off between sessions?

While it depends on how far apart you space your sessions, we typically leave the PID on as long as we're in the same room. Ball vape housings are built to retain heat as efficiently as possible so if we're planning to take a hit every couple hours we generally just leave our PID on so the ball vape is at temperature whenever we want!
